Instructions for Completing This Milestone
- After you have obtained approval of your research plan from your full dissertation committee, your mentor will submit your plan to dissertation@capella.edu for scientific merit review.
- The scientific merit reviewer will review each item to determine whether or not you have met the criteria. You must meet the criteria to obtain approval. The reviewer will provide feedback on any criteria that you have not met.
- Your research plan will be approved or deferred for minor or major revisions.
- If your research plan is deferred, you will need to make the necessary revisions and obtain approval for the revisions from your mentor.
- Once you have mentor approval for your revisions, your mentor will submit your plan for a second review.
- You will be notified if your plan has been approved, deferred for minor or major revisions, or not approved.
- You will have up to three attempts to obtain scientific merit approval of your research plan. Learners, mentors, and reviewers should make every possible effort to resolve issues before the research plan is submitted for a third time. If your plan does not pass the scientific merit review on the third attempt, then the case will be referred back to your mentor, the research specialist in the School of Education for review, evaluation, and intervention. Interventions may include a requirement that you to take a writing course or attend the Dissertation Writer's Retreat. The purpose of any intervention is to help you develop the research and writing skills that will help you succeed.
- Once you have received approval of your research plan, you may proceed to prepare your IRB application. Learn more about the IRB process.
